Gunnar has become very inquisitive lately, so I guess I should have seen this one coming...
Location: bathroom
Activity: both Mommy and Gunnar going potty
Gunnar: "Mommy, where is your penis?"
Mommy: "Mommies don't have penises."
Gunnar: (after a quick inspection of Mommy) "Mommy has a bottom."
Gunnar then tapped me on the bottom and walked out.

Quote of the day
Last week, Gunnar came home from school with a bag of dirty clothes, which has been quite common during these potty training days. I feared the worst... another pair of muddy Thomas the Train underwear headed to the trash. But I opened the bag and found only slighly damp pants. So I took a look at his daily report, and it stated that he had pooped on the potty twice that day! That was a record. He had pooped in the potty at home a few times over the past couple of months, but nothing significant or consistent. I cheered with delight and gave Gunnar a big hug. His reponse, accompanied by a huge grin of accomplishment...
"Snake in the potty!"
Needless to say, both Erik and I fell over with laughter.

Parenting Science and Math 101
Here are a few things I've learned lately about being a mom of 2 kids...
Parenting Math: 1 + 1 = 5
I was talking to my Turkish sister, Ekin, online the other day, and she was explaining her hesitation for wanting to have a 2nd child... when it comes to kids, 1+1=5. I think we proved that equation true last night. Between Gunnar's night terrors (an unfortunately common occurrence lately) and Levi's insatiable hunger (I nursed him 3 times last night!), our bed may as well have an eject button installed that is activated every hour. However, on the bright side, I think our 2 boys produce at least 5 kids worth of smiles, hugs, and kisses everyday.
Parenting Science: the Revenge Gene
No matter what time we put Gunnar to bed, he wakes up by 6:30am at the LATEST, ready to go eat breakfast and start his day. Where does he get this from??? Both Erik and I are certainly not morning people and usually end up in a game of possum to try to get the other to tend to Gunnar on the early weekend mornings. Thus enter, the Revenge gene. We've decided that this is a gene implanted in us by our parents with the sole purpose of being passed on to our children. It turns our children into morning people, thus getting us back for all the bad things we put our parents through. I guess an apology wasn't enough?!!
I suppose I should have realized when I was pregnant that Parenting Science and Math is different from what I learned in school. My first clue? The genius who claimed that pregnancy only lasts for 9 months!! Ha.

A Happy Halloween!
Halloween was a blast this year. We actually started celebrating in September, when Gunnar insisted we get a pumpkin so that he could scoop it out. Needless to say, we found ourselves buying a second pumpkin in October since the first met its demise in the compost pile several weeks before Halloween. With help from Mr. Mike, our pumpkin turned into an adorable Elmo.
The Friday before Halloween, Primrose celebrated with their annual parade. We got there in time to hold our cute little pumpkin...
...and to see a less-than-thrilled green dragon waddle around the playground.
Apparently, that is the face that Gunnar makes when his dragon suit is about 5 inches too short in the torso, thus creating a MAJOR wedgie. I'm still not sure how the teachers were physically able to pull his hood up. Needless to say, on Halloween night, the hood stayed down. And he was a much happier dragon!
We met up with the neighbors for a costume contest and trick or treating.
Gunnar was a bit timid at first, unsure of what this holiday was all about.
But after about 2 houses, he quickly figured out that all he had to do was knock on a door to get some candy, and he was off!
And here he is with the cutest little bumble bee I've ever seen, our neighbor, Lauren.
Though Levi never made it into his full pumpkin costume for the night's adventures (he was asleep when it was time to go), he was still in the spirit and had fun spectating.

Family pictures!
From Family pics Oct 2010 |
During our most recent visit to Charlottesville, we had one of our favorite photographers, Mary Bias, take pictures of us at the Boars Head pond. Here are some of my favorites...
Updates
WORK - I'm back at work. Nothing's really changed - good or bad. The good news is, I enjoyed my job before my leave, so that means I will hopefully still enjoy it. So far, so good, but I do miss my boys!!
PACIFIERS - I poked holes - 4 of them to be exact - with a pushpin into Gunnar's car pacifier. He didn't notice. So either the holes were too small or he just lets it hang out in his mouth without actually sucking. If the latter is true, I hope it is not a warning sign that he will take up dipping later in life. Gross. Anyway, for the next car trip, I "forgot" to put paci back in the car and told Gunnar I didn't know where it was. Great - now I'm teaching him that lying is ok. But, the good news is that once we start rolling, Gunnar stops asking for paci, and I can actually understand him when he talks to me in the car now. Chalk one up for Mom. However, getting rid of bedtime pacis will probably not be as easy, as I actually hear Gunnar sucking on those pacis as he drifts off to sleep.
POTTY TRAINING - Still having 1-2 accidents/day, but peeing in the potty at least 20times/day (or so it seems). Great job, little buddy! No poop in the potty yet - he usually waits for his naptime diaper for that one. Though his teacher had to throw away one pair of his underwear last week. Thank you, Ms. Woods, for taking care of that one!
HALLOWEEN - A smash hit with Gunnar. Can't wait to post pictures!
LEVI - Great 1st day of school. But woke up with a badly stuffed up nose this morning and hasn't pooped since Thursday (today is Monday). My coworker was laughing when I arrived at work this morning - he'd taken a message for me from the doctor, explaining how to help Levi with his constipation. Daddy's on his way to school with a bottle of brown sugar water. Feel better soon, little guy!

T minus 4
Only 4 days left of maternity leave. Yes, I have already shed some tears over it. Of course, I've only gotten about half of the projects done that I wanted to while I was on leave, but I've taken full advantage of the extra time with my boys. We've gone on lots of trips to visit family, hosted many visitors, and enjoyed plenty of playtime at home. It's been fun watching Gunnar grow and learn. We've spent lots of time together making art, digging in the sandbox, sliding, swinging, cooking, playing with trucks, laughing with the tickle monster, singing, and dancing. Of course, we will continue the fun after I go back to work, but our weekend time will become just that much more precious. Levi's been a champion of a little brother, just going with the flow and smiling constantly. And we thought Gunnar was a laid-back baby... Levi smiles at the drop of a hat and fusses only when he's hungry or tired. All in all, my leave has been everything I wanted it to be. And I even took some time for myself, visiting the gym regularly and running with my neighbor. I raced in my first triathlon since before Gunnar was born, and I've been going to physical therapy to get my post-pregnancy body back in alignment.
Life seems to be traveling faster than ever these days. Erik took another trip to Italy last week, but fortunately I only had to be a single mom for a few days. Grammy and Pop-pop made a special visit to help out with the boys and to celebrate my birthday. Grammy even made me a scrumptious cake, which Gunnar helped frost, and Erik made my day by sending me roses. Yesterday was Gunnar's first day in underwear (we made it through the day with 2 pair of underwear and 1 pull-up - not bad for a beginner!), and Levi ate his first bowl of cereal. Gunnar had his 1st dentist appointment last week (not sure about the dentist's toothbrush, but loved the suction straw!), and Levi had his 4-month checkup (he's 75th-80th percentile for height, weight, and head circumference). We had our first parent/teacher conference at Primrose this morning and found out that Gunnar's been fooling us... he doesn't even ask for his pacifier at naptime! However, at home, life almost comes to an end if we don't have 2 pacifiers in bed and one in the car. Gunnar, I hope you'll forgive us by the time you're old enough to read this... your pacifiers are about to have a tragic accident. We may blame the squirrels for putting a hole in your car paci. And the other pacis may be getting mailed off to needy babies. I'm sorry, buddy, but your daddy and I have been enablers for too long. An intervention is needed. And I promise we're doing this because we love you! Stay tuned as the drama unfolds...

Quotes
A while ago, I received a text from Uncle Robby, and I've been meaning to post it ever since...
Dinner tonight -
Will: "Daddy, how did Tanty M get the baby out of her tummy?"
Grace: "The doctor said something magical."
Speaking of Will, here is photo evidence of what he has been teaching Gunnar...
This is a picture from our family beach trip:

Survival of the single mom
While Erik was traveling around the world in 14 days (literally!!), I braved the highway with a 2-year-old and a 3-month-old to make it to my only chance of survival as a single mom... the grandparents' houses! The road trip went amazingly well. We only had to stop once, and fortunately I've mastered the art of peeing while holding an infant in the Baby Bjorn and calmly but forcefully reminding a 2-year-old not to touch the tampon disposal box. Ewww!
Our first stop, Patty and Rooty's house. This was our first extended stay in Richmond without any other cousins around, and though we absolutely love being with the whole family, Gunnar had a blast being the main focus of Patty and Rooty's attention. Every morning, Gunnar would go into Rooty's room and tickle his toes to wake him up. They would then go get the newspaper and share a bowl of cereal. How cute!
Gunnar got to get up close and personal with the ducks at the University of Richmond lake.
He was on a mission to pet one.
We also took a trip to Maymont to see the animals. Unfortunately, we got there too late to see the bears, but we did get to see all of the farm animals, the raptors, and bison.
We had a blast at the new CCV pool complex, which is more like a swimmer's paradise, with 4 pools! Gunnar liked playing in the "sprinkles" (aka: fountains) and the "ocean" (aka: jets) the best.
And we got to spend time with our good friends, the Pierces and joined Sydney and Charlie at the Children's Museum.
We took a day trip to Charlottesville to visit with Grammy and Pop-Pop. It was a perfect day for wagon riding, playing in the sprinkler, checking out Pop-Pop's workshop, and eating cupcakes.
We made it back home to North Carolina in time to hang out with friends for the weekend and to truly test my skills as a single mom for a few days. How'd I do? Well, Erik came home to a house that was still standing, but this momma was exhausted!

Life According to a 2-year-old
It's official. We live with a 2-year-old. Fun? Yes! Challenging? Definitely yes!! Here is life according to Gunnar as a 2-year-old...
1. I can do everything by myself.
2. Everything is mine.
3. If you ask me, I will tell you that poop goes in the potty. But I won't always put it there.
4. Screwdrivers can fix anything. (the tool, not the drink - we try to be responsible parents!!)
5. Litte brothers drink lots of milk and poop all the time. But they are cute too and deserve lots of kisses.
6. Brushing teeth is optional, and I usually opt not to attempt it.
7. Blowing bubbles never gets old.
8. Tickle monsters are the funniest thing in the world!
9. Any food that is round can turn into a ball at the end of dinnertime.
10. If I make a cute face and say please, I usually can get what I want.

Happy Birthday, Gunnar!
Gunnar turned 2 on July 21st. This posting is a bit late, but fortunately the celebration was not!
We had a fun celebration for him - Grammy and Pop-pop came to visit, and all of our neighbor friends came by for cake and ice cream.
Erik and I constructed a cement mixer cake in honor of Gunnar's love of those trucks, and Gunnar had a blast with all of his new toys.
Gunnar was funny about the "birthday song" this year... the day before his birthday, we took a dump truck load of brownies to his class and sang to him.
He literally tried to crawl under the table! I'm not sure if it was from fear of not understanding what was going on or from the off-key sounds of Mom trying to sing, but by the next day, Gunnar was loving the attention. He started to realize that with the song came presents and cake, and by bedtime on his birthday, he was singing the birthday song to himself. Happy Birthday, Cheeks - We love you!

Friends & Potties
About 4 or 5 months ago, Gunnar started showing interest in potty training. He would always ask to help Erik and I go potty - retrieve toilet paper, close the door to give us "privacy", flush... So we got out the little potty for him to sit on. He initially took it apart and used it to put his toys in. Then he sat on it to read books. Then it just sat there for a while. We weren't sure how to approach potty training, and then something interesting happened...
We've been getting spoiled lately, having the excuse of a new baby to convince our friends to come visit us while we enjoy time at home. We're loving every minute of it! The Spachs brought us dinner one night, and Gunnar got to play with his good buddy, Keegan. Those boys are hilarious together - running around like they'd just won the lottery. So cute!
Keegan has recently been potty trained, and Gunnar was interested to see Keegan go potty while he was visiting. Two days later, Gunnar came home and ran into the bathroom, yelling "POTTY!" Uncle Robby was in town, and he had the pleasure of taking off Gunnar's dry diaper and sat him on the potty. Gunnar peed in the potty for the first time! Yippee!
Then, just last week our friends from Charlottesville - Steph, Andrew, Eamon, and Adelaide - came to see us. Eamon and Gunnar had a great time playing with toys, swimming, and blowing bubbles together.
Steph and Andrew were troopers, making their longest trip yet since having Adelaide, who is just a couple months older than Levi. And we truly appreciate it, not only for Andrew's cooking and Steph's wine and good company, but also for Eamon's poop. You see, Eamon was also just recently potty trained. And the night he left, Gunnar pooped in the potty for the first time. Whooohooo!
So, after hearing about all of the different approaches to potty training, we've ended up taking the "let friends with potty-trained kids visit and show Gunnar how it's done" method. Lazy? Maybe. Smart? Yup. I think so! Now who's going to visit next and teach Gunnar to wipe himself???

Happy Retirement, Rooty!
On July 17th, we got the entire family together at Childress Vineyards to celebrate Rooty's retirement, which has been a long time coming. We are so excited for him. Finally, after more than 30 years at DuPont, he gets mornings without alarm clocks and time to travel with Patty. Hooray! Unfortunately those alarm-free mornings ended at our family beach trip when Rooty agreed to room with Gunnar, who woke him up no later than 6:15am every morning. Sorry, Rooty!
Crazy Uncle Angus took a bunch of pictures at the vineyards, which I am anxious to see and will post when I get them. In the meantime, here are a couple of the family with Levi.
